Description: Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) are two programs run by the Social Security Administration (SSA) that provide benefits based on disability. This training will provide a basic overview of SSI and SSDI and attempt to clarify some of the often-misunderstood subjects surrounding disability benefits. The training will include an introductory webinar that will cover basic definitions, differences between the two programs, and eligibility requirements. Two days later, we will hold an in-person training that will provide a deeper dive into the two programs, including extensive information on employment incentives programs. There will also be ample time for Q&A. In addition, the in-person training will provide an overview of SOAR (SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery), an evidence-based model for assisting people who are experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness in applying for public disability benefits. In 2017, SOAR had a national SSI/SSDI approval rate of 64%, compared with the non-SOAR approval rate of 10-15% for individuals experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness.
