Over 30 million adults in the U.S. have challenges with reading. They are blocked from accessing critical information about health, employment, and community services when content is presented in a confusing and difficult way. The Clear Language Lab works to promote equity and transparency through effective, reader-centered communication.

In this workshop, you will:
• Identify challenges beginning and intermediate readers may face in everyday texts
• Learn about the benefits of using plain language practices
• Identify ways to strengthen communication with your participants using a plain language framework
• This training is for administrators, communications staff, or frontline staff at agencies working with adults or families who are homeless or formerly homeless

Presenter: Melanie Sampson, MA has over 15 years of experience in adult education, including teaching, program administration, and volunteer management. For nearly a decade, she taught and managed adult education programming in Rogers Park, one of Chicago’s most diverse neighborhoods, annually working with students from over 30 different countries. She has also taught in the City College system and administered educational programming in a supportive housing program. Currently, she is the Content Director of the Clear Language Lab at Literacy Works.

She has an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in English language & literature and sociology as well as a master’s degree in linguistics with a concentration in TESL from Northeastern Illinois University.

Fee: The training is free of cost. CEUs are not available for this workshop.
