Trainer: Melanie Kinley, BA, has worked in the field of mental health for 33 years and has provided training and consultation for the last 20 years. She is currently a trainer/consultant at Thresholds, Chicago, Illinois, where her trainings focus on clinical topics and practitioner skills. She has provided training for the State of Illinois Department of Human Services and Department of Corrections, the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association (PRA), NAMI Illinois and Chicago, the Texas Behavioral Health Association and the Florida Council on Community Mental Health among other organizations. In 2014, she received the LeRoy Spaniol Educator Award from PRA.

Description: This training session (The Use of Mirroring and Reflecting in Motivational Interviewing) focuses specifically on reflective listening skills, providing background on the power of reflection over questions. Participants will learn the difference between a simple and complex reflection, overstatement, double-sided reflection and the use of reflections to elicit change talk and weaken sustain talk. Vignettes and role plays will be included.

Objectives:
1. Identify the 4 different types of reflection
2. Identify 3 benefits of reflection instead of other responses
3. Identify and practice affirming, validating and normalizing reflections
4. Identify and practice summary reflections

This training is for counselors, social workers, mental health and substance use professionals.

Fee: The training is $15.00 and CEUs are available at a charge to the participant. The cost for CoC Members is $15 per CEU hour, and for Non-CoC Members, it is $20 per CEU hour.

**THIS COURSE HAS COURSE MATERIAL SAMPLES**

The SOAR Challenge is a sequence of technical assistance and facilitated sessions
designed to support agencies in setting and meeting their 2019 SOAR goals.
Participating agencies will set SOAR goals, identify applicants, and complete a set
of SOAR applications, attending webinars and in-person peer events along the way
for additional guidance.

This introductory webinar will provide an overview of what to expect from the SOAR Challenge, as well as setting SOAR goals, identifying applicants, and using the Online Application Tracking system to track SOAR outcomes.

Goal Setting and Identifying Applicants Training Course Objectives:

• Attend the webinar 1 on Tuesday, June 25, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm to be hosted by Margaret Smith, Program Manager at All Chicago via Go To Webinar
• Use the SOAR Challenge Agency Goal Setting Guide to set SOAR goals
• Begin identifying applicants
• Please complete the survey at the end of this course

The SOAR Challenge is targeted to CoC agencies that have at least one SOAR-trained staff member and are experiencing one of the following:
1. Need more guidance getting SOAR “off the ground” or identifying applicants
2. SOAR-trained staff have not done an application in some time and need reminding of steps
